How to Use Generic Windows Installation Keys
Whether you’re reinstalling, repairing, or evaluating Windows, using a generic installation key is simple and fully supported by Microsoft for temporary use. Here’s how to use generic keys for Windows 7, 8, 10, and 11.
Windows 11 & 10
- Download the official Windows Media Creation Tool from Microsoft.
- Prepare a USB installation drive and boot your PC from it.
- When prompted for a product key during setup, enter the generic key from our Key Generator tool.
- Continue setup; Windows will install but remain unactivated until you enter your purchased license.
- After installation, activate Windows using your genuine license key through Settings > Update & Security > Activation.
Windows 8 / 8.1
- Download the Windows 8.1 ISO or use original media.
- Boot from your installation media.
- When asked for a product key, use the generic key matching your edition.
- Complete setup, then activate later with your own license.
Windows 7
- Install Windows 7 from DVD or USB.
- When prompted, enter the generic key for your edition (Home, Pro, etc.).
- Complete install and activate after setup if you have a valid product key.
Important: Generic keys do not activate or validate Windows permanently. They only allow installation or temporary access. Always use a legal, genuine license for ongoing use.
